Hickenlooper signs tax amnesty bill

Colorado businesses and individuals who are delinquent on past years’ tax payments will have the chance to make good on them without penalties or interest under a bill that Gov. John Hickenlooper signed into law Friday.  Senate Bill 184, sponsored by Sen. Pat Steadman, D-Denver, creates an amnesty period from Oct. 1 through Nov. 15 this year in the hopes of raising about $9.7 million for the State Education Fund.

With a discussion raging over whether balancing the state budget should involve paying new taxes, two Democratic lawmakers hope to focus part of the debate on paying existing ones.  Sen. Pat Steadman and Rep. Mark Ferrandino, both of Denver, filed a bill Wednesday that would offer an amnesty to individuals and businesses that owe back taxes.

Gay-rights supporters chose Valentine’s Day to introduce a civil-unions bill and deliver messages to lawmakers urging them to support the measure.  “Love is love,” read one of the more than 1,000 messages, which were linked together to make paper chains.

With Republicans controlling the state House come January, 2011 may not be the optimal year to pass a civil union bill in Colorado. But relationship equality is one of the more important civil rights issues of our time, so it’s at least time to try again.
