I was honored to serve as one of four Grand Marshals of the 2012 PrideFest Parade in Denver. This annual celebration of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender communities in Colorado takes place in Senate District 31, beginning in Cheesman Park and ending in Civic Center Park. Hosted by The Center, this year’s parade was bigger than ever and included all four of the openly LGBT state legislators as Grand Marshals: Rep. Mark Ferrandino, Sen. Lucia Guzman, Rep. Sue Schafer and myself.
This picture was taken by Mark Ferrandino, as he and Sue Schafer were riding in a car behind Lucia and I in the parade. I like how you can see the crowd lining East Colfax to watch the parade. The picture certainly captures the moment.
When asked to serve as a Grand Marshal I had mixed feelings. I was of course honored and willing to serve, as I’ve long been a proponent of inspiring political activism at this event. But part of me wished this would have happened in celebration of the passage of Civil Unions legislation, a major goal accomplished. I couldn’t say no, but it does make me wonder what we’re going to do next year…
A big thanks to all the family, friends and volunteers that walked with my banner in the parade. Because I was riding in a convertible near the front of the parade I wasn’t able to be part of my contingent until after we completed the parade route. Fortunately the parade has grown so large that I was able to join my marchers not far into the parade route because they were so much further back in the parade. I later joked at the rally in the Greek Theatre in Civic Center Park that I liked being Grand Marshal so much that I did the parade twice!
